Poser is mysmithmicro's main software, and is what I used to 'pose' the characters for the artwork on this website. Poser is not an actual modelling program, but moves models, both people and creatures, into whatever pose you so desire, hence the name. Poser is at the lower end of the 3D software market.
DAZ sell quite a few modelling programs that are quite affordable if you are just starting out. I used their Bryce 5 to do most of the 3D landscapes on this website, which has since been upgraded. You can download their DAZ Studio software for free, which has similar capabilities to mysmithmicro's Poser Software. Great place to start and is at the mid to lower end of the modelling market.
e-on own the landscape software Vue, and have products suitable for the beginner right up to the professional movie maker. The top end of its software range has been used in Hollywood films, but its high quality comes at a high price.
The links here will take you to websites that sell 3D Modelling programs. From moderately priced to very expensive software, they have just what you need if you want to do 3D art. Check out the Free Software Section first if you want to try some modelling before spending your money. Our recommendations are not guarantees, so please make sure you read the supplier's terms and conditions.
Want to try 3D Animation? Then Autodesk's Maya is one of the very best softwares on the market. It is very expensive, but worth it if you want to take your 3D artwork to the next level. They have a Personal Learning Edition that you can try for free.
Most 3D images you will see on the Internet go through a process called Postwork. This basically means 'touching up' the image in a paint program. One of the most popular softwares for this is Abode's Photoshop. It is expensive but can do amazing things with any image you create, so well worth the investment if you intend to do a lot of artwork.
Coral Painter is another paint program similar to Photoshop. Considerably cheaper, it can still do amazing things to help enhance the quality and finished look of your images.
Cinema 4D is Maxon's great modelling program. They also have Bodypaint 3D which is a great paint program used by professionals. Quite expensive software, but can do great models and textures.
Lightwave is NewTek's great modelling and animation software. Used by major film Directors, it is very versatile. The creatures created for the artwork on this website were made with Lightwave 6, the latest version supercedes the older ones in many ways. Quite expensive, but you can do a lot with it.
