DAZ Productions : Studio @

Superb landscape software, really generates excellent terrains. A lot to learn, but worth it if you enjoy great settings. Does not import objects, however, it is possible with additional software.

Terragen @

This software is near the top end of the 3D market place, very expensive but can do amazing things. This is the Personal Learning Edition (PLE), which basically means you can try it for an unlimited time, learning how to use it before spending over a thousand pounds for the fully licensed version. You will need to fill out a registration form prior to downloading the software.

Autodesk : Maya (PLE) @

You will find here some helpful links if you want to try your hand at 3D art for free prior to paying for sometimes expensive software. Click on the @ icon in each section to take you to the relevant website. Please remember these are only recommendations and not guarantees, therefore check the supplier's terms and conditions before downloading their software.

Good software for beginners who have no idea where to start as far as 3D art is concerned. Some good basic tutorials to get you going and to help you understand the underlying principles involved with posing a model. Great online community with plenty of artists only too willing to help newcomers.

Blender @

Great models can be created by this software with a little bit of time and patience. Plenty of tutorials to help you on your way.

e-on software : Vue Infinite (PLE) @

This link is for the Personal Learning Edition of Vue Infinite, the high quality landscape software sometimes used by Hollywood Directors. Superb features, but be warned, there is a great deal to learn here if you want to be any good. You can also trial Vue's other versions, but they have a 60 day time limit for their usage.

Wings-3D @

This software is a good place to start if you want to learn the very basics of modelling. Quite simple to use once you have learnt how to use the interface, from here you can then progress onto more advanced softwares that the professionals use.
